Our SuperDeluxe Initiatives

“Pamoja tuta fanyo makubwa” is Swahili for: “Together, we can do great things.

1. Art in Common Art Bash: A 2-3 hour segment when we go into a community in need and teach art workshops to kids and adults! We present and build upon the World Canvas, share new art projects and hold our Workshop in a Box.

2. Art in Common Bus: Our bus will be used to transport the World Canvas from city to city, asking and documenting, “What gives YOU hope?” and providing the guidance and materials to make the World Canvas squares. The bus will allow us to work inside and out, rain or shine, utilizing art tables, customized teaching and workspace, art storage, which is why this is a SUPERDELUXE initiative!

3. Art in Common World Canvas: The world canvas started in Bridgeport while Aimee was working at a refugee resettlement agency in Fairfield County, Connecticut. She brought gesso’d canvas squares to children and adults in the form of classes and workshops, along with painting and drawing supplies. She asked, “What brings YOU hope?” The language barrier present provided the perfect opportunity to communicate via the art process. The kids and adults loved it, and we shared stories about our squares. The she went home and assembled the squares to create the beginning of the Art in Common World Canvas. We will take the canvas to other cities and ask the same question, and build on the canvas. The main message is to break the isolation, if just for a moment, that is experienced when resettling in a new country.
